The 2nd district is situated on the banks of the Missouri River in the beautiful state of Nebraska. The district includes Omaha which is the largest city in the state with a population of more than 425,000 people. The 2nd district is also home to many other great cities and towns such as Bellevue, Bennington, Elkhorn, La Vista, Papillion, Ralston, Valley and Waterloo. Omaha and its suburbs are the 60th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The city grew on the Missouri River and earned its nickname, the "Gateway to the West", because of its central location as a transportation hub for the United States in the late 1800s. Today Omaha is home to eight Fortune 500 companies.

The district benefits from world-class healthcare facilities and health care costs that are well below the national average. We have several top hospitals including two academic health-science institutions, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University Medical Center. These two institutions have produced groundbreaking biomedical research.

When visiting Omaha you'll find many historic landmarks such as the Gerald R. Ford and Malcolm X birthsites, Boys Town and Fort Omaha.

The 2nd district is also home to our men and women in uniform. Offutt Air Force Base is located in Bellevue and is owned by ther 55th Wing. It houses the Air Force Weather Agency and the U.S. Strategic Command. Offutt's legacy includes the construction of the first two bombers to drop atomic bombs and nearly 30 years as the aerial command center for the U.S. in case of nuclear war during the Cold War. In July 2007 the Space Shuttle Atlantis returning from its mission via a shuttle carrier aircraft stopped at the base for refueling while being transported back from California to Florida. On September 11, 2001, George W. Bush conducted one of the first major strategy sessions for the response to the 9-11 attacks from a bunker at the base.

Visitors to the 2nd district will enjoy our world-class Henry Doorly Zoo which includes the world's largest indoor rainforest, the Lied Jungle, Kingdom of the Night cave and the Scott Aquarium. Regional events and activites can be enjoyed at the Qwest Convention Center, the Strategic Air and Space Museum and the Joslyn and Durham Museums. Omaha is proud to be known as the home of the College World Series.
